Ready-made e-commerce platform or custom build?

It is the first decision when you start selling online. The pros and cons of each route, and who each one suits, in plain language.

Everyone who wants to sell online reaches the same fork in the road: rent a ready-made platform by the month, or have your own store built? There are situations where each is right. The decision depends on where you are today and where you want to be in a year.

What is a ready-made platform?

Packaged systems you use for a monthly or annual fee: pick a theme, upload products and start selling. Servers, security and updates are the platform's responsibility.

Pros

  • Fast to open; you can be selling within days
  • Low starting cost
  • Payment, shipping and marketplace integrations come built in
  • Technical maintenance is not your problem

Cons

  • The rent never ends; plans and commissions rise with turnover
  • Design and features go only as far as the platform allows
  • When you say "we need a feature like this", the answer is often "not possible"
  • If you leave, moving products, customers and your SEO history is hard work

What is a custom build?

The store is developed around your business model, from scratch or on an open-source core. The code and the data belong to you.

Pros

  • The site follows the way you work: dealer pricing, made-to-order, subscriptions, whatever you need
  • No monthly rent or sales commission
  • No design limits; you will not look like your competitors
  • It can talk to your accounting, warehouse or production software however you like

Cons

  • Higher initial investment
  • Longer development time
  • You need a team you can rely on for maintenance and updates

Which suits whom?

Is there a middle way?

Yes. Many of our clients start on a ready-made platform and move to a custom build once sales settle. What matters is making sure the domain and the customer data are yours from the start, so you lose nothing when the day comes to move.

Eight questions to ask before deciding

  1. How many products do you have, and how many will you have in a year?
  2. Is the price the same for everyone, or do you need dealer, wholesale or member pricing?
  3. Are products standard or made to order (sizes, printing, option combinations)?
  4. Must orders connect to your accounting, warehouse or production software?
  5. Do you sell on marketplaces and need stock synchronised?
  6. What do platform rent and commissions cost at today's turnover, and at the turnover you expect?
  7. Who will run the site: you, an employee or an agency?
  8. If you ever switch platforms, can you export products, customers and orders?

If most answers to the first five are "standard, simple, no integration", a ready-made platform is right for you. If you have dealer pricing, made-to-order products and accounting links, a custom build is unavoidable.

Watch the hidden costs

Both routes have costs that do not appear on the quote. Ready-made: theme and plugin fees, plans that rise with turnover, extra charges for some integrations, platform commission on top of the payment gateway. Custom: server and maintenance, security updates, new feature requests and dependence on a team that knows the code. Ask both sides "what will I have paid in total after a year?"

How a migration works

Clients moving from a platform to a custom build always follow the same order: export product, category, customer and order data; build the new site with the same URL structure or 301 redirects so Google rankings survive; reconnect payment and shipping; test the whole flow with trial orders; finally point the domain at the new site. Done properly, customers notice no interruption. The biggest risk is a platform that will not let you export your data, so whichever you choose today, make sure the data stays yours.
