How to add your business to Google Maps: a step-by-step guide

You can add your business to Google Maps for free. Here is how to register, verify and move up in the map results.

When someone types "restaurant near me" or "tyre shop in Gaziosmanpaşa", Google shows the map and three businesses first. You do not have to pay to be one of those three; a Google Business Profile is free. Here is what to do.

1. Check whether you are already listed

Search for your business name on Google Maps. Sometimes Google or a customer has already created a listing for you. If one exists, click "Own this business?" and claim it. If not, move on to step two.

2. Create the profile

Go to business.google.com with your Google account and enter your business name. Take care here: enter the name exactly as it appears on your sign. Names stuffed with keywords can get a profile suspended.

3. Choose the right category

This is the most important step. The primary category decides which searches you appear in. Pick the narrowest accurate option: "Kebab restaurant" rather than "Restaurant", "Dentist" rather than "Doctor". You can add secondary categories later.

4. Address and service area

If customers come to you (shop, office, clinic), enter your address. If you go to the customer (plumber, removals), you can hide the address and select the districts you serve.

5. Verification

Google wants to confirm the business is real. The method varies: phone, email, a video recording, or a postcard sent to the address. For video verification you are asked to show your signage, the interior and a document belonging to the business in one take. Your profile does not appear on the map until verification is complete.

6. Fill in the profile

  • Opening hours (including holidays)
  • Phone and website
  • Services and, if relevant, products
  • At least ten photos: inside, outside and of your work
  • A short description of the business

How do you rank higher on the map?

Google looks at three things: distance from the searcher, relevance to the search, and how well known the business is. You cannot change distance, but the other two are in your hands:

  • Ask for reviews. Ask every satisfied customer, and reply to the reviews you get.
  • Add photos regularly. Recent photos show the business is active.
  • Keep details identical everywhere. Name, address and phone must match on your website, Instagram and profile.
  • Have a website. A site linked to the profile that describes your services affects ranking directly.

If you would rather not deal with it, or your profile has been suspended, our Google Maps listing service handles the process on your behalf.

The most common mistakes

  • Adding keywords to the business name. Names like "Mehmet Hair Salon Gaziosmanpaşa Best" break Google's rules. Use the name on your sign.
  • Opening a second profile. If an old listing exists, claim it. Two listings at one address can get both suspended.
  • Using a virtual office or home address as a storefront address when you do not receive customers there. Choose the service-area model instead.
  • Not updating opening hours. Showing "open" when you are closed means wasted calls and bad reviews.
  • Not replying to reviews. Thank the positive ones, answer the negative ones calmly.
  • Using stock photos. Real exterior, interior and team photos perform far better.

If your profile is suspended

Google sometimes suspends a profile for "violating guidelines", usually over the name, address or category. The fix is not to open a new profile but to correct the existing one and file an appeal, with documents proving the business exists (tax certificate, sign photo, invoice). It can take days or weeks. Do not open a second listing in the meantime; it only prolongs the process.

Monthly upkeep after launch

  1. Add a new photo: a job done, a new product, a shot of the premises.
  2. Post a short update: an offer, a new service, a change in hours.
  3. Reply to new reviews.
  4. Check the Q&A section; customers can leave questions there.
  5. Enter holiday hours in advance.

The link with your website

Google compares the profile with your website. If the contact page shows the same name, address and phone, the profile gains strength, and separate service pages on the site also help map rankings.
