Google Ads or Instagram ads: where should the budget go?

Both are advertising, but they work in completely different ways. Which suits which business, and where to start on a small budget?

This is usually the first question from a business owner who has decided to advertise. The answer lies not in "which is better" but in "how does your customer behave".

The basic difference: searching versus scrolling

On Google people look for something. "Boiler repair", "wedding favour prices", "emergency locksmith". The need exists at that moment and the person is there to find a solution. Your ad appears right then.

On Instagram nobody is looking for anything. People pass the time and scroll. Your ad appears in front of someone who had not thought of you until that moment. Catch their interest and they stop; fail and they move on.

Who is Google Ads better for?

  • Urgent needs: locksmith, plumber, electrician, vehicle recovery
  • Researched services: lawyer, clinic, insurance, removals
  • Corporate and B2B sales: machinery, wholesale, software
  • Products people search for by name

Here the customer is already searching. Your job is to show up in that search.

Who are Instagram and Facebook ads better for?

  • Products sold on looks: clothing, jewellery, home décor, cosmetics
  • Food and drink, cafés, venues
  • New products people do not yet know exist
  • Events, courses, campaign announcements

Here the customer is not searching for you because they do not know you yet. Your job is to catch their eye with a good visual.

The cost side

On Google you pay per click, and clicks are expensive in competitive sectors, but the person arriving is closer to buying. On Meta, impressions and clicks are usually cheaper, but purchase intent at that moment is lower. So look at cost per customer rather than cost per click. To see that, conversion tracking has to be in place.

Where to start with a small budget

Splitting the budget in two and being underpowered on both sides is the most common mistake. Our suggestion:

  1. Start with whichever of the lists above fits your business better.
  2. Test with a narrow area and a few keywords, or a single product.
  3. At the end of the first month, count the calls and messages.
  4. Increase the budget of the campaign that works, then add the second channel.

How do the two work together?

The best results come when they feed each other. Someone sees the product on Instagram and later searches your brand on Google; someone who came from Google but did not buy is shown an ad again on Instagram. Having your Google Ads and Meta ads accounts managed by the same team makes that setup much easier.

Examples by sector

  • Locksmith, plumber, electrician: the customer is searching right now. Google Ads search campaigns, limited to the districts served. Instagram barely helps here.
  • Boutique and jewellery brand: nobody searches "silver necklace" and buys the first result; they buy what they like the look of. Instagram and Facebook ads first, Google Shopping later.
  • Dental clinic, aesthetic centre: a researched purchase. Google Ads for searches like "implant prices", Instagram for trust-building before-and-after content. Both together.
  • Restaurant, café: customers from nearby. Google Business Profile and map ads plus venue visuals on Instagram.
  • Wholesaler, manufacturer (B2B): buyers search on Google and want a price list. Google search ads and LinkedIn; Instagram second.
  • Courses, training centres: Google Ads during enrolment periods, Instagram for awareness in between.

What decides success on both channels

  1. The page the ad leads to. A slow, broken or confusing page wastes the click. Build a dedicated landing page if needed.
  2. Measurement. Calls, WhatsApp taps and form submissions must be defined as conversions.
  3. Response speed. Reply two hours later and the customer has bought elsewhere.
  4. Patience and data. Switching off after the first week is the most common mistake.

Agency or do it yourself?

You can test a single Instagram campaign yourself on a small budget. Google Ads is more technical; without negative keywords, a bidding strategy and conversion tracking, budget disappears fast. If the agency fee is less than the budget you would otherwise waste, an agency makes sense. Make sure the ad budget and management fee are listed separately and the ad account is in your name.
