How do product photos affect sales? Phone or studio?

Same product, two different photos, very different sales. The rules of a good product photo and practical tips if you shoot on a phone.
Someone shopping online cannot pick the product up, feel the fabric or check the colour in daylight. All they have is the photo. In e-commerce the photo does the work of both the shop window and the sales assistant.
What does a bad photo cost?
- No clicks. Among twenty products side by side on a marketplace, the eye goes to the cleanest one.
- No trust. A careless photo suggests a careless product.
- Returns. A product whose colour looks wrong comes back with the comment "not like the picture".
- Costlier ads. An ad with a visual that does not catch the eye pays more per click.
Five rules of a good product photo
1. Consistent background
Shoot every product against the same background and from the same angle. Your store then looks like a whole. Marketplaces mostly require white.
2. The right light
Hard shadows and glare hide detail. Soft, even light keeps the colour close to reality.
3. More than one angle
Front, back, side, close-up detail and the product in use. Each question in the customer's mind should be answered by a photo.
4. A sense of scale
Show how big the bag is, how the necklace sits on a neck. Shoot the product with a person or a familiar object.
5. Sharp and high resolution
When the customer zooms in, they should see the stitching, the texture, the label.
Is a phone good enough?
If you are just starting and have few products, yes, it will do for a while. Mind the following:
- Shoot in daylight by a window; do not use flash.
- Hang a white card or sheet behind the product.
- Keep the phone steady; a small tripod is enough.
- Shoot all products on the same day, in the same place, from the same angle.
- Do not use filters; keep the colour true.
When is a studio shoot a must?
With shiny, reflective products (jewellery, glass, metal), where colour accuracy matters (textiles, cosmetics), when the catalogue grows, and once you start advertising, the phone stops being enough. At that point a professional shoot is not a cost but an investment that shows up directly in sales.
Can your existing photos be rescued?
Often, yes. Backgrounds can be cleaned and replaced, light and colour corrected. Show us what you have before commissioning a reshoot. Our product photography service covers both shooting and editing existing photos, and we can cut short videos from the same session.
What each product group needs
| Product group | What matters | Is a phone enough? |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing and textiles | Colour accuracy, fabric texture, on-body look | Yes for flat lays, hard for model shots |
| Jewellery and accessories | Glare control, macro detail, sense of scale | Usually not; reflection and sharpness issues |
| Food | Freshness, natural light, presentation | Yes in daylight; packaged goods need cut-outs |
| Furniture and décor | In-room context, proportion, material | Partly, with an on-location shoot |
| Cosmetics and packaged goods | Clean background, sharp labels, consistent angle | No; marketplace standards are strict |
| Machinery and industrial | Size, detail shots, in operation | On location, together with video |
Marketplace rules
Marketplaces such as Trendyol, Hepsiburada and Amazon have image rules: a white background for the first image, the product filling a set share of the frame, no logos or text, specific resolution and aspect ratios. Non-compliant images are rejected or pushed down in listings. Knowing where you will sell before the shoot means images are shot once and used everywhere. Ad visuals follow the opposite rule: in-use shots with people and settings beat white backgrounds. A good shoot plan covers both needs in one day.
After the shoot: naming and uploading
Save files with descriptive names such as "black-leather-belt-front.webp" instead of "IMG_4521.jpg"; Google Images reads them. Write descriptive alt text for each image, and compress file sizes so pages stay fast. These are cheap, effective SEO steps that most store setups skip.
Where to start
With few products and a tight budget, start with the phone rules above and move your best sellers to a professional shoot as sales grow. With many products or ad campaigns ahead, shooting properly from the start is cheaper overall. Send products to our studio in Gaziosmanpaşa by hand or courier, or book an on-location shoot on Istanbul's European side.
