How long does SEO take to show results?

Why "first page in a month" is not realistic, what changes in the first weeks, and what to do if you cannot wait.
The short answer: for most businesses the first meaningful results arrive between three and six months. The long answer depends on the current state of your site, your sector and the keywords you are targeting. Below we explain what lengthens that period and what shortens it.
What determines the timeline?
Your site's age and history
Google is cautious for a while with a site launched on a newly registered domain. A site that has been online for years and has links from other sites climbs much faster with the same effort.
Competition
For "lawyer Istanbul" you are up against thousands of sites. For "employment lawyer Gaziosmanpaşa" there are a handful. Narrow, local keywords can deliver within weeks; broad, competitive ones take months.
Technical health
If the site is slow, broken on mobile or cannot be crawled by Google, rankings will not come however good the content is. Those issues have to be fixed first.
Content
Google wants to surface the page that best answers a question. Without a separate, substantial page for each service and articles that answer real customer questions, top positions do not happen.
What to expect, month by month
| Period | What happens? |
|---|---|
| Month 1 | Technical fixes, keyword research, Search Console setup. No visible change in rankings yet. |
| Months 2-3 | Pages are re-crawled. The first gains appear on narrow and local keywords. |
| Months 4-6 | Organic visits rise noticeably. Some keywords reach the first page. |
| After month 6 | Top positions on competitive keywords. The effect compounds as the work continues. |
Beware of "guaranteed number one"
Google decides the rankings and consults no one about its algorithm. Anyone offering a guarantee is either promising first place for a keyword nobody searches, or planning to use methods that work briefly and then get your site penalised. Good SEO does not give guarantees; it gives transparent reports.
If you cannot wait
If you have just opened and need the phone to ring now, SEO alone will not do it. With Google Ads you appear in searches from day one while the SEO work runs in the background. As organic traffic grows, you trim the ad budget. A Google Maps listing is also the fastest-acting step for local businesses.
Five things that shorten the wait
- Start with local, narrow keywords. "Web design Gaziosmanpaşa" rather than "web design". Less competition, faster results; broad terms come later.
- A separate page for each service. A site describing every service on one page ranks for none.
- Google Business Profile. For local businesses the map results come before site rankings and respond faster.
- Finish technical fixes in month one. Content written while pages are not indexed or the site is slow is wasted.
- Regular content. Two posts a month beat ten posts once a quarter.
How do you measure the result?
- Search Console: which queries you appear for, your position and your clicks. This is the real evidence of progress.
- Analytics: are organic visits growing month on month, and do those visitors call or fill in the form?
- Phone and form: what matters in the end. If rankings rise but the phone stays quiet, the wrong keywords are being targeted.
These tools must be in place; if not, we set them up in month one. See Analytics and Search Console setup.
A realistic example
Picture a clinic site in Gaziosmanpaşa that has been online for three years with no SEO work. Month one: technical fixes and a separate page for each treatment. Months two and three: first-page entries for district-level searches like "dentist Gaziosmanpaşa" and visibility in map results. After month four: a visible rise in organic visits and the first calls. Broad terms like "dentist Istanbul" come months later with blog and reference depth. This is a typical course, not a guarantee.
